Our AST 1 Course is designed to introduce the fundamentals of safe backcountry travel and avalanche awareness. Throughout the 2-day course, participants will learn about avalanche types and characteristics, how to identify avalanche terrain, mountain weather basics and snowpack formation, trip planning tools and map reading, companion rescue techniques, and essential avalanche safety gear. This course is ideal for skiers, snowboarders, and splitboarders looking to build confidence and decision-making skills in the winter backcountry. Minimum intermediate ability required.
Notebook, pen, and any course materials. Avalanche gear, if you have it (beacon, shovel, probe - available for rent). Splitboard, touring skis, snowboard, or skis (you will need some form of transport down the mountain!). Lunch, water, and snacks. Dress for variable winter weather and bring enough warm layers.
